Book Entry 78: 1968 Our First Chickens

There was a little chicken house on our property.  Larry bought a couple dozen chicks in the spring.  Actually he bought the chicken feed at J.S. West in Modesto and they gave us the chicks.  We had fun watching them grow.  He had bought a mixture of chickens.  We had red ones, white ones, and black and white speckled ones.

The most fun were the little Araucona chickens.

The Araucona chickens were all different.  They had different colored feathers and were easy to tell apart.

Arauconas are also known as “Easter Egg Chickens” because they lay white, brown, green, pink, and blue eggs.

Sometimes the eggs are one pure color and sometimes they have spots on them.  We had a lot of fun with those chickens.
When they were old enough to butcher we saved a few favorites to lay eggs and put the rest in our freezer for future dinners.
